Movie Review - Cinderella Man

I never really liked Ron Howard's directing ability. Some people rant and rave about his stuff but I'd watch one of his movies, smile, and forget about it the next day. This is yet another Ron Howard movie.

It's a movie with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger about a boxer and his family struggling through the Great Depression. Nice sets, some good shots, blah blah blah, but something was missing.

For one, when making a movie about boxing, I'm thinking at least the director should know a little bit about boxing. The fight scenes were Rocky'ish. Well, no. I take it back. They weren't that bad, but there were too many similarities.

For another, how about a little bit more dialogue and a little bit less overdrawn melodramaticism. Ah, got it. That's what I don't like about Ron Howard. His stuff is too melodramatic, too scripted Hollywood.

I did enjoy though, don't get me wrong. But tomorrow, I'll forget I saw the movie. 5 dead zombies.

Russle Crowe is an Oscar Hound.
You can tell by his face he wants oscars all day long for every movie he stars in. I can't stand that man.

I liked the movie pretty well, but I saw it after Russell Crowe threw a hissy fit and hit that guy with a phone, which diminished my enjoyment of watching him on camera. I don't know why that is, but I have trouble going to see movies with actors who are assholes IRL. It shouldn't be that way, it should really come down to this - are they good at what they do?

Southerngirl - That's probably why I suffer from CRS. My memory was fine as a kid. :p

Sadie and Jen - Yes, Russell Crowe annoys me. Even before the phone incident, I couldn't put my finger on it, but he seemed so full of you know what. What gets me about the phone incident is if I did that, I'd be spending a night in the slammer. He is a decent actor though, but he has a tendency to overact and strike a pose. Uh oh, now I have Madonna's Vogue going through my head. Shouldn't have said that.

I loved the movie and thought it was well done, but I do think Howard tries too hard. Not EVERY movie needs to scream "oscar nominee". He doesn't seem to make a movie just because he wants to, but because he wants recognition.

I can't stand Renee Zellwegger - whoever told her that sucking on a lemon makes you look pretty lied to her. What's with that squinty face?

It was good though. The actor that played Max Baer was great (as always in everything he does) and it did a good job showing the despair of the depression. I still don't get why it's fun to watch two grown men beat the crap out of eachother...

I agree Laura, Renee is getting on my nerves. I liked her enough in the first Bridget Jones, Jerry McGuire and Cold Mountain--but now she's getting tiresome. Her squinty face is the clincher...

There's word that actor Russell Crowe may be about to reach a settlement with the man he allegedly assaulted at a posh Manhattan hotel earlier this summer.

Police say Crowe threw a phone at Nestor Estrada after he was unable to call his wife in Australia from his room at the Mercer Hotel in June.

Now the London Daily Mail says Estrada is close to signing an $11 million deal in exchange for dropping all charges.

Crowe is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan court on September 14.

According to the newspaper, the settlement would allow Crowe to avoid assault and weapons possession charges, which could prevent him from working in the United States."

Two words:
Ha Ha
That's actually one word, typed twice. *giggle*

Crowe is a polarizing guy. I fall mostly on the pro side because of some swell stories I've heard about him from people way down the food chain (extras, grips, etc.) that worked on-set with him. As for his outbursts, well, I think it's safe to say he's an uncompromising guy.

Ron Howard is positioning himself as the new Spielberg -- solid crafstman, but a little too sentimental for most of his subject matter. Great guy to work with, though. I'm most curious how he'll handle The Da Vinci Code.

Well said. I keep trying to like her, but then she keeps making that face. That face she makes is so awful. I did like Nurse Betty, even though that scene they showed was a little too graphic.

Sadie - Don't tell anyone, but I liked Bridget Jones' Diary. Oh, too funny about Crowe. thanks for the copy and paste.

Tenxin - You'll need to do us a favor. Watch Bewitched and if it sucks, let us know. I'm afraid to invest $7 in it.

Jason - I really wanted to like Crowe, especially after that sea battle movie that everyone hated that I actually thought wasn't bad. But the outbursts thing against innocent people really turns me off from him.

I always try and just remember that these guys were once the drama geeks in high school...most of them still are, only with money.

I sort of wanted to see Cinderella Man until a friend of mine told me it was just Seabiscuit with a boxer instead of a horse. I guess I would rather see a horse than Russell Crowe...

I try to separate personal feelings about an actor from how I feel about their work. Unless they go over the top, ala Tom Cruise. Crowe has done some great stuff, so ven though he may act like an arrogant schmuck, he's still a very good actor.
